Ceroc Dunedin News and Events - 3rd August 07

Hi Everyone,

The Ceroc Dunedin newsletter comes out every 2-3 weeks and keeps you all up to date with the social events and workshops that are being planned here in Dunedin and in other towns throughout NZ. We also include interesting stories and some great dance movement advice from teachers and dancers nationwide.

Ceroc's busy calendar continues this month with several events planned both locally and nationally. We have received some good feedback following the social movie night that we held at the Academy cinema in Dundas St on July the 22nd. We had a good crowd that enjoyed some spectacular dance demonstrations from the champs and a few other events. We are looking at perhaps organizing another night a bit later in the year.

But right now we have two fantastic workshops planned for tomorrow at the St John's Hall in Roslyn. Both are being taught by the flamboyant Ben Plows-Kolff. Ben has been teaching for Ceroc Dunedin since April this year and has just competed in the NZ Ceroc Champs, Advanced 'A' division with Monique. Ben has great timing and musical interpretation. His workshops are detailed below. Following the workshops will be our regular Dance Party at the St John's Church Hall (details below).

Please read on for more exciting up-and-coming events!

Ceroc Workshops

Workshop 1: Step Up

When: Saturday 4th August 2007

Where: St John's Church Hall Cnr of Wrights St & Highgate Rd Roslyn

(behind the church)

By: Ben Plows-Kolff

Cost: $25 or $40 for both workshops 1&2

Workshop Time: 12.00pm – 2.00pm

Want to learn how to dance like the pros? Want to know how to stand out in the crowd? Well Ben is here to introduce to you two concepts that are going to help you out big time! … The Cerokinetic Chain and Stage Presence. Now is your chance to Step Up and take your dancing to a whole new level! A combination of fresh new ideas, key Ceroc techniques, style and pizzazz to make your dancing stand out and amaze the partner you're dancing with. Combine this workshop with Ben's Musicality 101 and you'll be dancing like a star before the day is done.

Workshop 2: Musicality 101

When: Saturday 4th August 2007

Where: St John's Church Hall Cnr of Wrights St & Highgate Rd Roslyn

(behind the church)

By: Ben Plows-Kolff

Cost: $25 or $40 for both

Workshop Time: 2.30pm – 4.30pm

Ben is going to make the leap of faith between Ceroc and the rudiments of musical theory. If you've ever wondered why we dance on every second beat in Ceroc, or why we count "And One, And Two, And Three, And…" then your curiosity will be rewarded. And after unlocking this forbidden wisdom, Ben will explain some common Ceroc musical anomalies such as; musical beats, breaks and phrases, difficult "non-Ceroc" music, fast music, slow music, boring music, and musical shapes and styles. This workshop is a "must do" for everyone!!

Ceroc Christchurch social weekend in Hanmer Springs – September 8th and 9th 2007

This great weekend is on again! Last year quite a large group of Dunedinites joined a very large group from ChCh in Hanmer Springs for a weekend or fun and (mainly) relaxation! We hired holiday homes and enjoyed many of the activities that Hanmer has to offer. These included mountain biking, bush walks, Golf and of course, the therapeutic hot springs! We also had a dance party on the Saturday night, 'cause we just couldn't help ourselves!! J

If you are interested in joining us this year, please let Donna know ASAP on (03) 488 3591 or (021) 0599 165 or email Donna at donna.cox@xtra.co.nz so that she can arrange enough houses and beds.

Simply Ceroc Weekend – Wellington – October 20th – 22nd 2007 (Labour Weekend)

We already have 9 people from Dunedin, that I know of, booked to go to Wellington this year, check this out, it is a fun weekend!!

Simply Ceroc

The 8th Annual Simply Ceroc Weekend is an opportunity for Cerocers all over the country to meet centrally during Labour Weekend 19 – 22 October 2007 to socialise with the wider Ceroc community and develop their Ceroc ability.

We start on Friday night with the Phatt Pig Friday buffet dinner and dance at the Loaded Hog where out of town and local participants can meet up.

There are 10 workshops running this year that are available to all dancers over Saturday and Sunday. We are pleased to present Mark & Simone Harding, owners of Ceroc Australia, as our international teachers. Cerocers from all levels are catered for and we are continuing the popular Beginners package to encourage newer dancers to attend both Beginners workshops and The Grand Masquerade Ball.

The Showcase Spectacular dance party on Saturday night will again have 3 dance rooms this year, allowing more people to attend after it was sold out last year. The 'Theme Room' will be playing music in various themes throughout the night, in addition to our large main dance studio and the ever-popular 'Chill Out Room'. The showcase performances are sure to be great entertainment once again and we invite you to take part in this fun and 'no pressure' event by preparing something to perform yourselves. Why not give it a go!

The highlight of the weekend is of course "The Grand Masquerade Ball" on Sunday night where we can experience the glitz and glamour that is Ceroc at it's best! This year we not only have a Masquerade theme but we also are thrilled to be holding the event at Te Papa – The Museum of New Zealand. This fabulous venue is one of Wellington's most prestigious and their award winning restaurant Iconz is providing a full 3-course buffet meal for all attendees.

To finish the weekend we have a farewell brunch on the waterfront on Monday morning where you can relax and say goodbye to the friends you have made over the weekend.

For more information, please see the bright orange flyers at your studio or our website www.simplyceroc.com The flyers also contain the registration form or you can register online on the site. Last year we had participants from every NZ branch, which was fantastic, with over 500 people registered for the weekend. Come and join us for a fabulous weekend of fun and friendship. We look forward to seeing you in Wellington.

Quote for the week

"The Dance is a poem of which each movement is a word."

~Mata Hari~

The language of movement requires no words - neither for its expression, nor for its understanding.

Without uttering a syllable, the vocabulary of dance speaks directly to the senses, seducing the heart and securing the soul.

~ Royal NZ Ballet ~
