Ceroc Dunedin News and Events

Hi Everyone,

The Ceroc Dunedin newsletter comes out every 2-3 weeks and keeps you all up to date with the social events and workshops that are being planned here in Dunedin and in other towns throughout NZ. We also include interesting stories and some great dance movement advice from teachers and dancers nationwide.

Firstly my apologies for the long wait between Ceroc Dunedin News Letters. I have had a challenging time over the past month fitting everything in!

There has been SO MUCH happening within Ceroc over the past 2 months. We all had a fantastic time in Christchurch over the weekend of the 20th, 21st and 22nd of April at the Super Ceroc Weekend. Well done to Matt, Deb and their dedicated crew for a huge job that was very well done!!

The next major event is the PPS Hairwear NZ Ceroc dance champs in Auckland . Only 10 days to go! Those at classes in recent times will have seen us all practicing hard. It is not too late to get tickets for this fantastic event; even if you are not competing the night will be a spectacle of wonderful dancing, outfits and performance! A night not to be missed. Tickets can still be purchased through Ticketek. More details on the Champs later in the news letter.

For those that cannot make it to Auckland, there is a chance to see our Dunedin dancers in a full dress rehearsal performance as part of the International Dance Day at the Dunedin Town Hall on Sunday afternoon the 6 th of May. Ceroc is due to perform later in the day between 3.30 and 4.30pm . All the competitors will be performing a freestyle dance and the Doubles team will perform their advanced version of "Fever" now known as "Southern Heat!" Tickets will be available at the door all afternoon for the International Dance Day, and will be between $5 and $10.

But before we all depart for Auckland we will get to enjoy the long overdue Ceroc Dunedin "first Saturday of the month" dance party which is this Saturday the 5th of May in the St John's Church Hall, Roslyn. The theme is Cartoon Characters – "Heroes and Villains" More about the Party later in the news letter.

And to get us all in the dancing mood, we will be running our "Beginner to Inro-mediate Moving Up Workshop" from 3.00pm – 5.30pm on Saturday at the St John's Church Hall.

Last Friday night, the 27th of April, we began teaching Ceroc classes in Balclutha. In conjunction with the Clutha District Council we provided an introduction night of demonstrations and a free beginner class. The response was amazing! With over 80 attending and taking part in the beginner class. A HUGE thankyou to all the Dunedin dancers that traveled down to help out on the night!! We will be heading back down to Balclutha this Friday night to teach a beginner class from 7.00pm – 8.00pm at the Memorial Hall. We will then have a week off to compete in Auckland. We are due to continue with the beginner classes on the 18th of May, however at the moment we have not been able to secure a venue for that night. Suggestions will be welcomed!

Beginner to Intro-Mediate Moving–Up Workshop

This workshop will briefly cover the core beginner moves that you need to know at intro-mediate level, details on leading and following, arm tension, floor craft, spinning, being aware of other people on the dance floor and an introduction to the basic intermediate moves that form the core of our intro-mediate routines. This will include an introduction to our basic "dip" to help make learning these moves fun and safe in a normal class situation.

If you are considering attending Intro-mediate classes then this workshop should not be missed!

The intro-mediate and intermediate classes move faster than the beginner class and cover six moves instead of four. Knowing the basics well will enable you to learn the more technical intermediate moves faster and in turn allow you to dance them safer and with a lot more enjoyment.

Quote for the week

"A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done."
Vince Lombardi

"If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?"
Vince Lombardi

The language of movement requires no words - neither for its expression, nor for its understanding.

Without uttering a syllable, the vocabulary of dance speaks directly to the senses, seducing the heart and securing the soul.

~ Royal NZ Ballet ~

Kind Regards

John, Monique and the Ceroc crew :-)
