The Ceroc Dunedin newsletter comes out every 2-3 weeks and keeps you all up to date with the social events and workshops that are being planned here in Dunedin and in other towns throughout NZ. We also include interesting stories and some great dance movement advice from teachers and dancers nationwide. It's that time of year again when North Dunedin starts bustling with sounds of students unloading trailers, stocking of beer fridges and the setting up of flats for the ensuing year of study. It also sees the return of many students to our classes which always adds fun and energy to our dance nights.
Monday the 18th of Feb will see the beginning of 'Orientation week' at Otago University. We will once again be dancing and promoting Ceroc to the new students on Campus. If you would like to join us for a dance we will be outside Re Fuel bar and the Union Hall from 10.00am – 2.00pm on Monday and Tuesday and outside Clubs and Societies 84 Albany Street on Wednesday. It would be great to see you there! This is always a lot of fun and a great opportunity to hone some of those performance skills with the South Island champs fast approaching!
Our congratulation goes out to two of our dancers that got married on New Years Eve! Please see below for an invitation to a special celebration that Mike and Helen are planning for the 8th of March.
Finally, a wee 'heads-up', we are planning a Ceroc trip to Australia for the end of August this year. It will be to attend the 'Dance Mania 2008' weekend in Sydney and then relax and enjoy a few sun filled days and dance filled nights on Queenslands Gold Coast. If you think you could be interested in joining us for this trip, please let me know. Details of the Dance Mania weekend can be seen on the Ceroc & Modern Jive Dance Company's web site under the events tab. 24 people from New Zealand attended this fantastic weekend of workshops and parties last year. All who attended raved about how much fun it was! The rough itinerary is to leave for Sydney on Thursday the 28th or Friday the 29th of August, Dance Mania Friday 29th – Sunday 31st, fly to the Gold Coast Sunday night or Monday morning and return to New Zealand the following Sunday the 7th of September. I am putting together a rough budget now for those that are keen to start saving!!

Dunedin Workshop
details – Saturday Feb 23rd
On Staurday the 23rd we are planning to run our very popular Beginner to Intro-mediate 'Stepping-Up' workshop and in preparation for the upcoming South Island Champs an 'Intermediate Performance Style and Technique' workshop.
12.00noon – 2.30pm: 'Stepping – Up' Technique Workshop
This popular workshop will briefly cover the core beginner moves that you need to know at intro-mediate level, details on leading and following, arm tension, floor craft, spinning, being aware of other people on the dance floor and an introduction to the basic intermediate moves that form the core of our intro-mediate routines. This will include an introduction to our basic "dip" to help make learning these moves fun and safe in a normal class situation.
If you are considering attending Intro-mediate classes then this workshop should not be missed!
The intro-mediate and intermediate classes move faster than the beginner class and cover six moves instead of four. Knowing the basics well will enable you to learn the more technical intermediate moves faster and in turn allow you to dance them safer and with a lot more enjoyment.
3.00pm – 5.00pm: Intermediate Performance Style and Technique Workshop
Competition dancing is a little different to normal freestyle dancing. In this workshop we will be giving tips and guidance to dancing in competitions, and be covering some key style and technique tips to really help your dancing shine on the day!
This workshop will be aimed at Intermediate level dancers, but will be open to all levels. It will be fine for you to register WITH your competition partner and do the workshop with that partner if you wish. The rest of the people in the workshop will be rotating partners as usual.
These workshops are $25.00 each or $40.00 for both.

Mike Paulin and Helen Davies were married in New Plymouth on New Years Eve. We are having a dance/party in Dunedin, to welcome Helen (back) to Dunedin, where she was a student several years ago. Alright, several decades ago. But who's counting? It's for people who didn't make it to New Plymouth for the wedding. Obviously, because you weren't invited to New Plymouth and even if you did make it to the wedding you can come to the party.
The party will be in the Maori Hill Community Hall, which is by the roundabout on Highgate, at the top of Driver's Rd, on Saturday 8th March.
It is BYO and bring a plate for supper. We are talking finger food here nothing fancy. We will provide paper plates etc.
There will be a free beginner Ceroc dance lesson from 7pm until 8pm. Then there will be dancing till late.

Intermediate 'Moves' and 'Technique'
In this workshop we will teach some fun moves that are not taught in class and give some extra technique tips to move your dancing to that next level.
Times will be confirmed next week. These workshops will be $25.00 each or $40.00 for both.
Balclutha Classes
– Now running
Classes have resumed at the No Mean Feet dance studio in the main street of Balclutha on Friday evenings. We have now introduced an Intro-Mediate class on a Friday night.
The timetable will is:
Beginners Class: 7.00pm – 7.45pm
Freestyle dance time: 7.45pm – 8.15pm
Intro-mediate Class: 8.15pm – 9.00pm
Freestyle dance time: 9.00pm – 9.30pm
Please note that the beginner class will be shortened slightly to 45 minutes to allow the addition of the second class and maintain some freestyle dance time. The class format will remain the same.
As a guide you should have completed between 10 and 20 beginner classes before moving up to the Intro-Mediate level. It is always a good idea to talk with the instructor before you attend this class to ensure your safety and the safety of the others in the class.

Larnach Castle
Larnach Castle was built from 1871, a neo gothic colonial showplace, a dream home for William Larnach's beloved wife Eliza. No expense was spared in creating this beautiful building and the finest materials and craftsmen from all over the world were employed to decorate this wonderful Victorian Castle.
Larnach Castle is an award winning attraction and the Larnach Castle Gardens one of New Zealand's top gardens , awarded a "Garden of National Significance" rating by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. The beautiful gardens offer many gorgeous places to take photographs. A splendid memory of the evening is a photograph of all the guests on the front steps of Larnach Castle.
The historic Ballroom was built for Larnach's favourite daughter Kate's 21st birthday; this room is spectacular and has a fantastic polished timber floor.
Workshops on
Saturday the 15th of March
We will be running two workshops on the Saturday of the Ball. They will be taught by the wonderful Adam Nathanson and Mandy Britnell from Ceroc Wellington. More details will be released very soon about these workshops, but the basic details are:
11am - 1.00pm: Beginners Freestyle Workshop
Learn the secrets of fabulous freestyle. This workshop will help your transition from the structure of class to the spontaneity of freestyle and make dancing fun for you, your partner and everyone around you. Includes building confidence, lead and follow, timing, floor craft and other tips.
1.30pm - 3.30pm: Blues Workshop
Adam & Mandy are famous for their smooth flowing style and here they will teach some of their favourite moves that are so smooth you will feel like melting into the dance floor. You will learn the essence of Blues which is an emotional interpretation of the music and as a by product you will learn how to dance to slower music than you are probably comfortable with. Once experienced you will fall in love with dancing to slow and passionate music.
These workshops will be $30.00 each or $50.00 for both. You can register for these workshops at class.
South Island
Ceroc Champs –
Christchurch ANZAC
weekend – April 26th 2008
The Champs will be held in Christchurch on the ANZAC long weekend, and any Ceroc dancer can enter! It is all about having a go and there is a category of the competition to suit everyone. Competing can give you a great focus to improve your dancing. Or of course you could just come and watch, there will be some of NZ's finest Ceroc dancers flying in from around the country to make this event a day of fun and entertainment you won't want to miss.
Events will include the usual freestyle favorites, Teams, Showcases, Advanced Open and much more including new Youth and Senior events. There will be Super Ceroc Workshops on the Friday and Sunday as well.
