Ceroc Dunedin News and Events - New classes and Timetable!

Hi Everyone,

The Ceroc Dunedin newsletter comes out every 3-4 weeks and keeps you all up to date with the social events and workshops that are being planned here in Dunedin and in other towns throughout NZ. We also include interesting stories and some great dance movement advice from teachers and dancers nationwide.

We have finally sorted out our new class timetable. We hope it will provide a more balanced mix of class levels and freestyle times. Unfortunately it is difficult to suit everyone when planning class times, but hopefully we have found a good compromise. Please see below for details.

Only one more week before the stunning Masquerade Ball at Larnach Castle. We have only a few tickets left, you will not want to miss this fantastic night at one of Dunedin's premier landmarks. See below for more details.

I have confirmed a venue for classes to start on a weekly basis on Monday nights. This will provide a great option for those that cannot make a Ceroc class on Wednesday or Thursday, or perhaps just another fix for the passionate Ceroc Dance addict!! See below for class details and times.

There are many other events being planned throughout the country including the NZ International Ceroc Champs in May, registrations are flooding in for this bi-annual event. It promises to be the panicle of the Ceroc events for 2007. Details are at class or visit www.ceroc.co.nz/champs for details. A bit closer to home we have the launch of Ceroc Canterbury Plains on the 3rd of March and the Super Ceroc Weekend in Christchurch in April (details below!), yet another road trip to look forward to! All this on top of exciting classes, workshops and demonstration routines right here in Dunedin.

New Class Timetable

Monday night classes will start on Monday the 5th of March at the St John's Church Hall on the corner of Wright St and Highgate in Roslyn.
The night will begin with an Intermediate Plus class from 7.00pm – 8.00pm , freestyle from 8.00pm – 8.30pm and a beginner class from 8.30pm – 9.30pm finishing with freestyle through until 10.00pm.
To celebrate the launch of our third regular night of Ceroc here in Dunedin we are inviting everyone to attend this opening night FREE of charge!
Please note, however, that if you have not attended an Intermediate Plus class in the past, you will need to talk to John to ensure you are at an appropriate level to ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone in the class. The moves taught in this class will be Intermediate moves, but there will be some challenging move combinations, drops and close moves taught, but mainly we will be focusing on styling and improving your ability to lead and follow through differing music speeds and genres. If you have any questions about the content of this class, please ask me (John ). The beginner class is naturally open to everyone.
The timetable for Thursday will also change slightly. Beginners will remain the same from 6.00pm – 7.00pm , however, the Intermediate class will move slightly later and begin at 8.00pm and run through until 9.00pm allowing the beginners an hour of freestyle time after their class to practice and dance as well as giving the intermediates a chance to warm up before their class. There will then be an hour of freestyle time from 9.00pm – 10.00pm to finish the night off. The Thursday Intermediate class will be a solid intermediate covering a diverse range of moves and combinations.
The Wednesday Intro-mediate class from 5.45pm – 6.45pm is designed as a step between beginners and Intermediate. The combinations are simpler and we limit the dips to basic seducers and laybacks.
Please ask John or Monique if you have any questions about whether this is the class for you. We do recommend that you do the Beginner to Intro-mediate Moving Up Workshop before starting in this class.

Dance Party to welcome all our out of town visitors: Friday the 23rd of Feb

Our next BIG event is a Masquerade Ball to celebrate the 4th Birthday of Ceroc in Dunedin. This will be on Saturday the 24th February 2007. It is going to be at the historic Larnach Castle . Larnach Castle
Larnach Castle was built from 1871, a neo gothic colonial showplace, a dream home for William Larnach's beloved wife Eliza. No expense was spared in creating this beautiful building and the finest materials and craftsmen from all over the world were employed to decorate this wonderful Victorian Castle .
Larnach Castle is an award winning attraction and the Larnach Castle Gardens one of New Zealand's top gardens , awarded a "Garden of National Significance" rating by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. The beautiful gardens offer many gorgeous places to take photographs. A splendid memory of the evening is a photograph of all the guests on the front steps of Larnach Castle .

The historic Ballroom was built for Larnach's favourite daughter Kate's 21st birthday; this room is spectacular and has a fantastic polished timber floor.


Beginner to Intro-mediate Moving–Up Workshop

We are about to begin teaching these popular workshops again. They will be held on the first Saturday of each month and will coincide with our Monthly dance party held at the St John's Church Hall in Roslyn.
The first of these workshops for the year is on Saturday the 3 rd of March from 3.00pm – 5.30pm. There are only 20 female and 20 male spots available. Please register for this workshop by emailing me or register at class.
The workshop will briefly cover the core beginner moves that you need to know at intro-mediate level, details on leading and following, arm tension, floor craft, spinning, being aware of other people on the dance floor and an introduction to the basic intermediate moves that form the core of our intro-mediate routines. This will include an introduction to our basic "dip" to help make learning these moves fun and safe in a normal class situation.

If you are considering attending Intro-mediate classes then this workshop should not be missed!

The intro-mediate and intermediate classes move faster than the beginner class and cover six moves instead of four. Knowing the basics well will enable you to learn the more technical intermediate moves faster and in turn allow you to dance them safer and with a lot more enjoyment.

Super Ceroc Weekend in Christchurch

This is the second year of the Super Ceroc Weekend in ChCh. This year Mat and Deb have lined up a fantastic selection of instructors from around the country to teach a diverse range of workshops aimed at all levels of Ceroc Dancers. You can be well assured that there will be a workshop for you! They are also organising a Gala dance event for the Saturday night.

Super Ceroc Gala Party!!!

Come to the Gala on Saturday 21 April! This event will be the social highlight of the Super Ceroc weekend.

Initially this event was called a party, but it really is way more than that so we have changed the name to reflect the grandeur of the occasion. The venue is the magnificent Limes Room at the Christchurch Town Hall. This room is upstairs on the beautiful park side of the Town Hall overlooking Victoria Square . It will be elegantly decorated and magically transformed from the daytime workshop schoolroom into a lavish social setting. There will be light supper served and a cash bar available.

The dress code is semi-formal, to allow everyone to dress up to the nines, yet still optimise for a huge dance evening.

There will be entertainment in the form of the Lucky Dip Competition and some dance demonstrations, however these will be brief exciting interludes to minimise the interruptions to your dancing pleasure.

New Zealand Ceroc Champs in Auckland

Entries are piling into head office in Auckland for the NZ Ceroc Champs on May 12. The Advanced Open section is now full. Advanced freestyle sections are filling steadily.

There is still plenty of space in intermediate and beginner sections in case you are thinking about it… Need a bit more confidence? Consider a few private lessons from either John or Monique. It is very exciting competing in the Champs.

There is a small but dedicated group getting together from Dunedin. We will even have some dancers competing. This is a fantastic event and it is always great to have some hometown fans there to cheer you on when you are out on the floor.

Clubs and Soc's Classes

Regular classes will resume through Clubs and Soc's in term one of the Uni year, which will be Saturday March 3 and Tuesday March 6.
The times of these classes will be: Saturday mornings from 10.30am – 11.30am, Tuesday nights 4.45pm – 5.45pm and Tuesdays 6.00pm – 7.00pm .
Intermediate class will be on Tuesdays from 7.15pm – 8.15pm.

Launch of Ceroc in Invercargill

The 'Launch' of Ceroc in Invercargill on the 27th of January was HUGE!! Thank you to all who made the trip from Dunedin and the Southern Lakes. We had just over 200 people attend the night with around 160 first time Cerocers from Invercargill. It was very exciting to see so many smiles in one room!

The general classes have also started off very well with fantastic numbers attending the first two weeks of classes. Unfortunately we will need to find a new venue for the Friday night classes, so watch this space, as soon as we have venue signed up we will let you know.
