Newletter for July 31st

Hi Everyone,

The Ceroc Dunedin newsletter comes out every 3-4 weeks and keeps you all up to date with the social events and workshops that are being planned here in Dunedin and in other towns throughout NZ. We also include interesting stories and some great dance movement advice from teachers and dancers nationwide.

WOW these news letters just keep getting bigger, there is SO much happening in Ceroc at the moment.

The end of the month is almost here which means we have another dance party coming up!! That’s right, it is this Saturday night the 5th of August. A change to the normal venue this month, the dance party will be held in the North East Valley Baptist Hall which is opposite the Hospice. See below for details. Please note though that the workshops on Saturday afternoon will still be at the St Johns Church Hall in Roslyn,

Plans are well under way for the trip to Hanmer Springs with Christchurch Ceroc. We now have 25 confirmed for the weekend, which is a great response. If you have a burning desire to join us for this fantastic weekend road trip up to the hot pools, then let me know asap as I am sending the deposits away this week. We will sort out the transport this week.

An exciting development for Ceroc Dunedin is that we now have a “Blog”!! Katie Bennett has been very busy setting up this web site for us, and it is looking great!! See below for information on what a “Blog” is, and the URL for the web site.

Two great workshops are planned for this Saturday, our very popular beginner to intermediate moving up workshop and an intermediate Dips, Drops and Fun moves workshop.

Plans are well underway for the Taieri Gorge Railway Christmas Barn dance trip. Donna has booked 50 seats on this very popular event. More details on this soon.

Workshops – Saturday 5th of August in Dunedin

Venue: St Johns Church Hall - entry up the driveway on the corner of 373 Highgate and Wrights Street, Roslyn, the hall is behind the church at the end of the drive (some parking beside hall).

Workshop 1: 2 hours – 12.30pm to 2.30pm

Fee $20.00

To help everyone to make the most of their intermediate experience, we will be running a Beginner to Intermediate “moving up” workshop on Saturday 5th of August.

The workshop will briefly cover the core beginner moves that you need to know at intermediate level, details on leading and following, arm tension, floor craft and being aware of other people on the dance floor and an introduction to the basic intermediate moves that form the core of our intermediate routines. This will include an introduction to our basic “dip” to help make learning these moves fun and safe in a normal class situation.

If you are considering attending Intermediate classes then this workshop should not be missed!

The intermediate class moves faster than the beginner class and covers six moves instead of four. Knowing the basics well will enable you to learn the more technical intermediate moves faster and in turn allow you to dance them safer and with a lot more enjoyment.

The hall will be open from 12.15pm to allow everyone to warm up before the class and there will be ½ hour after the class to practice or ask questions.

Please Note
To help keep the men / lady ratio even, we are asking that you register for this workshop. Forms will be available at class, if you cannot make class before next weekend, please email, phone or text me on (021) 313 043 to secure your place.

Workshop 2: 2 hours – 3.00pm to 5.00pm

Fee $20.00

Intermediate and above “Dips, Drops, and fun moves”, 5-6 new dips and drops as well as some fun moves and Fundamentals for safe dips and drops.
The fee for both workshops is $30.00

Please Note
To help keep the men / lady ratio even, we are asking that you register for this workshop. Forms will be available at class, if you cannot make class before next weekend, please email, phone or text me on (021) 313 043 to secure your place.
I have advertised this workshop as a “solid intermediate” level. I have chosen to decrease the complexity of the moves a little to open up the workshop to some more men. We currently have only 4 men registered and 14 ladies, so guys we need YOU!!

And the blog

http://cerocdunedin.blogspot.com

Due to popular demand we have set up a Blog, which is an internet page, to share our Ceroc pictures on. If you have any pictures that you would like to share, please email them to Katie.

Please note this is not a commercial web page but a community page so there will be no advertising from or by Ceroc Dunedin, except for our contact details and class times. There is also some links to other Ceroc sites. It is just an opportunity to share all our photos and dance info that you think other dancers may be interested in. Katie will also load the current Ceroc Dunedin News Letters so that they are available to everyone at anytime. If there are photos on the page that you would rather not be there, please let us know and we will remove them (but I think they all look great!!) There are photos from all the recent dance parties and some from last year, check it out by clicking the URL address above!!

New Choreographed Demonstration Routine

We have had a great response from the ladies regarding learning the new demonstration routine, but not so many guys. Thank you to everyone for your interest in learning the new routine. We have chosen the track 'Fever' performed by Elvis Presley as the music for this routine. This is a great piece of music and will make for a fun routine.
This routine is set at beginner level and is made up of primarily beginner moves. There will be some small variations that will be a little challenging but it is going to be a fun routine. That does not mean it will be boring for intermediates, this will be a fantastic opportunity to sharpen your skills and really put some style into your dancing.

We would normally ask you all to register with a partner. Unfortunately we didn't indicate this clearly at the beginning, and we will require you to learn the routine with one partner, so please try to organize a partner before the practice. If this is not possible still come to practice and we will try to partner you up there. To make it worth your while coming to this first session we will rotate partners so you will all get to learn the first part of the routine, even if you don't have a partner yet. However at the moment we have eight men and twenty women so if you know any men that haven't registered with us yet, please let us know and bring them along!!

Our first meeting will be Friday 4th August 5.30pm - 7pm in Mojo's Hall, 219 Leith St (just down from Albany St). If you can not make the Friday practice time, please contact either myself (John) or Monique as we will probably be splitting the practices into Monday and Friday groups. We will discuss this on Friday night.

Any questions, please email myself or Monique or phone me on 021 313 043.

Update for venues and Dates for selected Thursday night classes during the year.

The Thursdays listed will be moved to the St Johns Church Hall on the corner of Wrights St and Highgate in Roslyn. They are an indication only at this stage and may change closer to the date. The Burns hall is pre-booked by other users on these nights, but cancellations do occur.

Both classes will begin 30 minutes later than normal. That means that the beginner class will begin at 6.30pm and the intermediate class will begin at 7.45pm.

September 21 - St John’s Church Hall, Roslyn

Simply Ceroc Weekend in Wellington – 20 to 23 October 2006

The simply Ceroc Weekend in Wellington at Labour weekend is approaching fast! This event has traditionally been the biggest annual Ceroc event in New Zealand. It is a fantastic weekend of dancing, workshops, socializing and partying!! If you can make it to Wellington then this event is NOT TO BE MISSED! We already have about 8 from Dunedin going up; however I am sure there will be more.
(The following was copied from the Christchurch News Letter, thank you Matt and Deb)
Accommodation
The Simply Ceroc weekend coming up in Wellington in October is already proving popular. The special $199 weekend accommodation offer at Hotel Wellington has already sold out, but they are still offering rooms for just $89 per night if you mention “Simply Ceroc” when you book. There are also a limited number of home-stays available with local Cerocers if you need to be counting your pennies but can’t bare to miss out.

A message from Ceroc Wellington…
Each week we will be highlighting one feature of the Wellington Simply Ceroc weekend in this newsletter, and this week we look at the main event:

The Grand Ball
The Grand Ball is held on the Sunday night of Labour weekend and is the culmination of all the events of the weekend. This is your chance to dress up and have a wonderfully glamorous night out dancing the night away with all the friends you have made over the weekend.

This year, as with last year, there will be red carpet up the stairs for you to make your entrance into the elegant foyer, all marble and glass and very art deco. You will be greeted by our doorman and leave your coats in our cloakroom and then proceed to have your photo taken by our photographers. All photos from the Ball will be available on the Simply Ceroc website in high definition for you to download free of charge for a month after the event. After that they will be available as thumbnails for you to view. You are of course welcome to bring your own still cameras to the Ball but we will be including video from the event on the Simply Ceroc DVD this year so we would ask you not to bring your own video cameras please.

During your entrance you will be serenaded by a quartet of singers which lends an enchanting atmosphere to the Ball. There will be tables and chairs and a cash bar for your convenience and filtered water freely available. We ask you please not to bring any of your own drink as this contravenes the terms of our liquor license. There will be a selection of wines, beer and soft drinks available for purchase at very reasonable rates.

The supper this year will be a selection of delicate savoury and sweet finger food served to your table during the speeches. There will be a fantastic prize awarded to one lucky attendee of one night’s accommodation for two people at the Tirohana Estate in Martinborough including wine and supper, and there will also be a bottle of champagne for the franchise with the most people registered for the most events during the Simply Ceroc Weekend. Last year this was won by Christchurch but will they win it again this year?!

Ladies, here is your chance to get out your best dress to be swept away on the dance floor by the elegant gentlemen. Men, here is your chance to get out your black tie attire or dinner suit, or your best shirt will be fine. If you don’t have anything already in your wardrobe then our sponsors Wilkins Formalwear have a great range of both formal suits and dresses and are offering a 10% discount for anyone attending the Ball. Please no jeans or T-shirts!

In conclusion, The Grand Ball will be a simply wonderful occasion and a fantastic finish to the weekend. Last year over 250 people attended and we are expecting many more this year with the discounts available when attending workshops and the Beginners Package. Make sure you attend this fabulous event!

Applications for the Simply Ceroc Weekend have been flooding in and the bright orange leaflet which includes the registration form is available at the Ceroc front desk at classes. Or have a look at the website www.simplyceroc.com for all the details.
