Latest Newsletter - June 29th

Hi Everyone,

The Ceroc Dunedin newsletter comes out every 3-4 weeks and keeps you all up to date with the social events and workshops that are being planned here in Dunedin and in other towns throughout NZ. We also include interesting stories and some great dance movement advice from teachers and dancers nationwide.

The end of the month is almost here which means we have another dance party coming up!! That’s right, it is this Saturday night the 1st of July. Dust off your boots ‘n’ braces ‘cause we’re hav’n a “Hillbilly Hoe-Down”! See below for details.

Thank you to everyone who supported our special workshop and dance weekend with Steve Lampert. His “Blues” workshop was very well received. He enjoyed the southern hospitality so much that he has indicated that he is very keen to return next year for a longer visit. If you videoed the workshop summery and are happy to make some copies (for a small fee J) please let me know as there have been some requests. Also if you were at the workshop and would like a copy please let me know.

Our monthly Ceroc Dance Party

When - the first Saturday of each month, the next is on the 1st of July.

Where - St Johns Church Hall - entry up the driveway on the corner of 373 Highgate and Wrights Street, Roslyn, the hall is behind the church at the end of the drive (some parking beside hall).

Supper – We have had several people suggest over the past few months that they would prefer to have food available throughout the night rather than just at 11.00pm, and that bringing a “Plate” would be a preferred option. So for the dance party this weekend I would like to invite you to bring your favorite “Plate” of nibbles for the supper. We will “top up” the supper if necessary with pizza. Entry for the night will be discounted by $5.00 if you bring a plate.

Fee - $10.00
$5.00 with plate of finger food.

Time - 8pm – 1.00am.

Theme – Hillbilly Hoe-Down

B.Y.O Drinks.
Note: Please bring your own drink bottle as this helps to minimize the disposal of plastic cups. There will be cups and water available.

Workshop

Saturday 1st of July in Dunedin: Beginner moving up to intermediate workshop.

Venue: St Johns Church Hall - entry up the driveway on the corner of 373 Highgate and Wrights Street, Roslyn, the hall is behind the church at the end of the drive (some parking beside hall).

Workshop 1: 2 hours – 3.30pm to 5.30pm

Fee $20.00

To help everyone to make the most of their intermediate experience, we will be running a Beginner to Intermediate “moving up” workshop on Saturday 1st of July.

The workshop will briefly cover the core beginner moves that you need to know at intermediate level, details on leading and following, arm tension, floor craft and being aware of other people on the dance floor and an introduction to the basic intermediate moves that form the core of our intermediate routines. This will include an introduction to our basic “dip” to help make learning these moves fun and safe in a normal class situation.

If you are considering attending Intermediate classes then this workshop should not be missed!

The intermediate class moves faster than the beginner class and covers six moves instead of four. Knowing the basics well will enable you to learn the more technical intermediate moves faster and in turn allow you to dance them safer and with a lot more enjoyment.

The hall will be open from 3.00pm to allow everyone to warm up before the class and there will be ½ hour after the class to practice or ask questions.

Please Note
To help keep the men / lady ratio even, we are asking that you register for this workshop. Forms will be available at class, if you cannot make class before next weekend, please email, phone or text me on (021) 313 043 to secure your place.

Update for venues and Dates for selected Thursday night classes during the year.

September 21 - St John’s Church Hall, Roslyn

November 16 - St John’s Church Hall, Roslyn

Social dance weekend is being planned in Hanmer Springs, North Canterbary by Ceroc Christchurch.

I have tentatively booked 10 spaces on this weekend for Dunedin dancers. If you are interested in joining us in Hanmer Springs for this fun weekend of hot springs and dancing, please let me know asap! I am hoping to get a good deal on airfares by booking very soon. It would be good value to hire a mini van from Christchurch as Hanmer Springs would be a 6 ½ hour drive from Dunedin, but only 1 ½ from ChCh.
Cheers
John

Quote for the week

“So, I think I would say, enjoy the process of learning to dance. The process of our profession, and not its final achievement, is the heart and soul of dance.”

-- Jacques D’Amboise --

And a special request for a quote from a past newsletter:

Beginner Dancer: Knows nothing, would love to dance to everything.

Intermediate Dancer: Knows everything, too good to dance with beginners.

Hotshot Dancer: Too good to dance with anyone.

Advanced Dancer: Dances to everything, especially with beginners.

~ Dick Crum, a folk teacher ~
